How To Dress Like the '50s... According to Masters Of Sex

Not only do I love the show, but I love the style almost even more, so I did a little dress up

And guess what, it's so easy to mimic their style!

Stay tuned while I show you four looks that I put together, their inspiration and teach you how to create them using your OWN clothes! :)

Look #1 The Secretary

Inspiration
What are they all looking at???

How to do it:
  • High waist (The staple of any look on this show!)
  • Body forming bottoms and structured tops
  • Hair pulled back from the face (I chose a low bun to accentuate my secretary-ness)
  • High collar or collared shirt buttoned to the top
  • One piece of elegant jewelry
Play with color on this one! I went for a dark color palette but Virginia from the show spices up her work wardrobe with gorgeous pops of tangerine, red and cobalt!
Seriously. What is she looking at now?

Look #2 Around the House

Inspiration

How to do it:
  • Picture yourself playing tennis at a country club or on a yacht
  • This is one of the few times where wearing pants was acceptable for women
  • Oxford flats or a variation
  • Hair pinned back
  • Relaxed shirts (unbuttoned)

Look #3 The Female Flower

Inspiration
Inspired my the most adorable character Vivian Scully, she epitomizes the average growing girl, fashionable, eager to please and haven't a clue about sex. Poor thing.

This was my favorite from the sheer overindulgence of it all.
How to do it:
  • Soft (baby-like) color palette. (I went for neutrals because those were the only colors in my closet lol)
  • Swooping, coiffed curly hair
  • Matchy matchy. Makes sure everything matches--but in a sophisticated way. I matched my brown belt to my purse and heels and matched my khaki gloves to my skirt (adorable, I know)
  • Go crazy with the heels. This is a look of over femininity, so pull out those spike toes and diva heels
  • Devil in the details! Go for texture, chunky knits, braided/textured belts, intricate brooches etc.

Look #4 Sexy Entrepreneur Bitch (2 Variations)

Inspiration

How to do it:
  • Dark color palette
  • Think Coco Chanel or Kathryn Hepburn
  • Tailored and well fitted clothes, especially a blazer
  • Neatly coiffed and elegant updo
  • Similar to the Secretary but more powerful and commanding
One last thing!

Act the Part

It's not enough to simply dress up like you're in the 1950s, you have to FEEL like you're in the 1950s... minus the racism... and sexism. Ok, I guess what we mean is, get your mannerisms down. Women in the 1950s were very in touch with their sensuality as females believe it or not, so practice being flirtatious and bubbly.

Because the 50s was such an oppressive time for women, I thought that those feelings would rub off on the clothing I wore, but I was very surprised at how sexy and powerful I felt in these outfits! I'm definitely incorporating them into my everyday wear.

Hope this helped. Please let me know what other TV and movie looks you'd like me to tackle in the comments below :)

Events, TV, and Radio

If you've followed me (Portia D.) On my IG:Portiaofdeporian, then you know I've had a few interactions with the media just within the last month! So I figured I'd give you the inside scoop, and of course let you know what I was wearing to get me noticed ;)

1. Fox Gossip News in LA

Yes, I got spotted walking along Hollywood and Highland Blvd, home of the famous Chinese Theatre and Hollywood Stars! The reporter (a woman who knows impeccable style of course!) snatched me up as soon as she saw me, exclaiming "ooh, can we interview you?!" I said, "hell yeah!"

What I got spotted in:
For more photos, check out our post: Deporian Takes Over Hollywood! or follow me on IG!

We wound up gossiping about Justin Bieber. I'll never forget her face when she asked, "what's the first word that comes to mind when you think of Justin Bieber?" And I said "lesbian" I think I saw her eyes roll out of her head right onto the Hollywood Stars! But, to my defense, if a knows the Tumblr "lesbians who look like Justin Bieber" you know my response was very warranted!

2. Curves Rock Fashion Show-Baltimore Hyatt Regency

I worked as an assistant to the lovely Tiffany Jeffers of Sylk Cosmetics, and along the way I met so many talented women starting their own businesses!

Here are a few!

Name: Black Sheep Cosmetics
What she offers: Custom, bold and all natural makeup!

Jessie, the owner and her daughter were so nice and funny! I spent most of the day with them, so much that they began to feel like a second family :).

Name: New Vintage by Sam
What she offers: Beautiful hand crafted beaded jewelry

Sam was so cute and friendly, and of course I adored her hair and style!

Look at that hair! I was in love!!!

Name: Fly Nerd
What she offers: Quirky silk screened T's matched with gorgeous floral print

Name: Liberated Art
What she offers: hand crafted jewelry in a slew of enchanting alternative materials!

Alisha was so down to earth! I loved chatting with her and look forward to perhaps collaborating in the near future ;)

3. 104.3

This one just fell in my lap, but 104.3 visited the restaurant I work at (Venti Tre Modern Italian) to promote. I wound getting a free shirt which I plan to customize!

4. CBS Philly

This happened just yesterday while Derris and I took a day trip to Philadelphia to relax and visit a few friends.

The reporter approached us as we reclined in Rittenhouse Square. She interviewed us about the new OK Cupid social experiment scandal but she and her camera man were so sweet and funny we talked about just about everything else!

That's it... for now
Love ya :)

Who Knew Iggy Azeala Was such a 90's Fan?!? ( #ThrowbackThursday)

   It's #ThrowbackThursday!!
So let's take it back to the 90s!!
We loved Iggy Azeala's recreation of the 90s hit movie Clueless in her music video "Fancy"!

The costume director of the  music video did a
fantastic job with mimicking the cute, preppy, and bubbly style of Cher Horowitz and the preppy but edgy look of "Dee".

The outfits in Iggy's video had a little more PUNCH to it, giving the looks a more modern twist!

What gym class you know is this stylish?!?!?

Even outside of school, these ladies are givin' it up!!

Speaking of recreations, let's take it back to the old days of Deporian!!
